Soil and salinity: why leaf edges burn
Sandy soil and saline well water are the two biggest challenges in a Saudi garden. How to recognise the problem and fix it.
Read the sign before you treat
Burnt leaf tips and margins despite consistent watering is the classic sign of salt accumulation — not, as is usually assumed, a shortage of water. Another reliable indicator: a white or yellowish crust forming on the soil surface or around pot drainage holes. If you see it, the problem is salinity, and watering more in the usual way will make it worse rather than better.
Periodic flushing is the cure
Salts do not disappear on their own; they have to be pushed below the root zone with water. Give one very heavy watering — several times a normal one — every few weeks. That watering is not for the plant, it is to rinse the soil. The prerequisite is genuine drainage; in soil that does not drain, flushing simply converts a salinity problem into a waterlogging one.
Sandy soil: excellent drainage, poor retention
Most Saudi soil is sandy: water passes straight through so it barely waterlogs, but it holds neither moisture nor nutrients. The fix is not to replace the soil but to improve it: add organic matter (compost or well-rotted manure) at planting and annually thereafter. Organic matter raises the soil's ability to hold water and nutrients without costing it its drainage.
Limestone soil and iron deficiency
Yellowing between the leaf veins while the veins themselves stay green is iron deficiency, and it is very common in alkaline limestone soils — not because iron is absent from the soil but because the high alkalinity locks it into a form the plant cannot absorb. That is why adding ordinary iron rarely fixes it; the answer is a chelated iron formulated for alkaline soils.
When a soil test is worth it
For a small home garden, reading the symptoms and improving the soil with organic matter is usually enough. But if you are setting up a farm or a rest house, or you have repeatedly lost trees in one spot for no obvious reason, a soil and water analysis earns its cost — it will tell you precisely whether you are dealing with salinity, alkalinity or a specific nutrient shortfall, instead of continuing to guess.
